What Kind of Coffee Packaging Can Protect the Aroma of Coffee Beans?

For a good coffee bean to show its rich and desirable aroma, it often requires a lot of time, effort and repeated trials by coffee practitioners. When consumers get their coffee beans, they expect them to be extremely fresh, no matter how long it takes to reach them.

 

This is where packaging comes into play. By using the right materials and features, the aroma of the coffee beans can be retained long enough for consumers to experience the flavor information listed on the package.

After choosing the right package, the next step is to fill and seal the bag. Improperly sealed coffee packaging can lead to oxidation, which can lead to rapid loss of aroma. A professional sealer is a way to go.

 

To ensure the freshness and convenience of the coffee beans, most coffee bean suppliers opt for resealable coffee packaging. Commercially available reusable sealing materials include zippers, crimp seals, and more.

 

The one-way exhaust valve is a fairly new concept. It was invented in the 1960s by the Milan, Italy-based company Goglio. Degassing is the process by which roasted coffee beans release gas (i.e. CO2). While the CO2 in roasted coffee will prevent it from becoming bland when brewed, too much CO2 can negatively affect extraction.

 

The one-way vent valve can be placed on almost any coffee bag structure and usually consists of five parts: the lid, the elastic disc, the sticky layer, the polyethylene sheet, and the paper filter.

 

While the degassing process of coffee beans is especially noticeable in the first few days after roasting, it actually lasts for a while. When CO2 builds up inside the package and applies pressure to the vent valve, it releases the CO2 without compromising the integrity of the packaged coffee or allowing oxygen in. This keeps more aromatic compounds in the coffee, preventing the flavor from fading away too quickly.
